Using sport equipment in recreational meetings?

Should organizers of sport competitions for recreational purpose give some limits for using equipment ? Class and price of the best equipments constantly increases. Even for swimming on highest level requires expensive special swimsuit. I believe if we do not play for maximal achievement we need not such a good equipment. But when somebody bring them then competition is not fair. And what about inter-school ? Is it good that some schools use excellent ski or bicycles?
